Gallo

Gallo in Hebrangova Street was opened during the awakening of the restaurant scene in Zagreb 5 or 6 years ago, when it went international. This elite restaurant defined its philosophy very clearly right from the start, so its beginnings were very successful. From the moment it was opened, Gallo was rated among the best restaurants in Zagreb and had regular clientele. We visited Gallo recently in an international company of people with high standards when it comes to food. And we were quite pleased with what we saw.

First we had some bruschette with garlic, cheese and tomatoes. Our European colleagues commented that the garlic was excellent. It had a real flavor that is very rarely found nowadays because of the growing import of Chinese garlic that looses its properties due to long storage times. Gallo had our sympathies right from the couvert.

The first course of a rather artistic name “Mare & Monti” consisted of a combination of pilgrim’s scallops, grilled mushrooms, tartar salmon, toast and arugula. Imaginative, tasty and attractive to the eye. It was followed by a combination of hand-made pasta (pennette with tomatoes, black Istrian fuzi with scampi) and truffle gnocchi. The staff told us that the tartufata is made in the restaurant, and so is pesto – made of home-grown basil and garlic.

Grande finale was the fillet of common dentex and sea-bass with potatoes from the oven, grilled vegetables and arugula with red grapefruit. For dessert we had another combination of sweet flavors – forest fruit parfait, A Thousand Leaves and a chocolate mousse. Perfect.

This fish menu was well complemented by Posip Marko Polo they recommended us in Gallo. The restaurant has a wine cellar with select Croatian and international wines constantly updated with new ones. There is also a selection of cigars for cigar aficionados.

However, the prices are quite steep so this restaurant seems available only for the select few. For example, the owner himself mentioned with pride how his restaurant was recently visited by Richard Gere. He left very happy...
