Quercus Merlot 2003

Quercus Merlot 2003
“Goriska brda” winery
Slovenia
“Goriska brda” is the biggest winery in Slovenia with 1.400 hectares of vineyards. Its tradition dates back to 1957 when it was established. They market white and red wines under the brand Quercus (Latin for "oak“). These wines that matured in oak barrels were made of varieties grown in Goriska brda region.
Merlot Quercus 2003 grew on the terrace locations 80 to 150 meters above sea level, and in the “Sub-Mediterranean” climate where the warm Mediterranean air and the cold Alp winds collide. 70 percent of the wine fermented in stainless steel barrels, and 30 percent in French and American barrique barrels. Around 30 percent of the wine later aged for half a year in barrels (“sur lie” technology), and the rest in stainless steel barrels.
As a result, we have a quality, dry wine with 13 percent of alcohol by volume. It has a compact live ruby color with a well opened fragrance of vanilla, plums and black currants. The taste is full and round, with a hint of spices, and a tertial bouquet with the tones of smoke and dried fruits. On the palate the wine is salty, alive; the mouth-puckering tannins are only slightly felt. This Merlot is simple, perhaps too simple to our taste. It is in now way special, but price to quality ratio is great, so we can recommend it as a sipping wine.
