Zinfandel Delicato 2004
Crljenak kastelanski is an old, almost forgotten Croatian grape variety, that captivated local and international winegrowing audience. Namely, it was established that Crljenak kastelanski and the American variety Zinfandel have the same genetic profile, i.e. they are the same variety. Under the name of Zinfandel, this variety was exported from the Imperial State Nursery in Vienna directly into US in early 1820’s.
In 1880’s it became the best spread variety in the US. The Zinfandel is still popular, especially in America. It occupies rather large areas, more than 23 per cent of all vineyards.
Indelicato family is one of the oldest Californian families successfully making wine for more than 75 years. The winery was established by Gasparé Indelicato, a Sicilian immigrant. Today, it is managed by his three sons, Frank, Tony and Vince. Delicato today picks grapes on more than 10.000 acres of several top locations in California.
Although Zinfandel is a highly esteemed variety in the US that usually gives strong and full, intensely colored wines, the quality and character of Zinfandel greatly depends on the location it is grown on, the age of the plants and technology applied.
We have to say right away that this Zinfandel is not the best Zinfandel has to offer. This wine is exported to Europe in cisterns and then bottled.
We have to look at this wine as a wine ready for drinking, because it is impossible that it will become anything more by aging in the bottle. It is pretty clear on the nose, with the commercially sweet fragrance of ripe fruit, raspberries and blackberries. Although Zinfandel gives strong, dry red wines (an exception is the semi-sweet rosé, also known as the Zinfandel Blanc), this semi-dry red seems quite unnatural, although it is, like many other American wines, very soft and smooth due to the remnant of unfermented sugar. This wine is too feeble for our taste, and it is probably relying not only on the sugar in the grapes.
