Spier Pinotage, 2003

Spier Pinotage, 2003
Winecorp, South Africa

Company Winecorp was founded in 1999 after a merger of three South African wineries: Spier, Longridge and Savanha. The vineyards of Spier are located in regions of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Darling on western coast of Africa. In the second half of that year, an e-mail circulated the Internet, allegedly from Spier, saying that everyone who forwarded it to 10 addresses would receive a package of Veuve Cliquot champagne. However, it was later established that it was just spam mail. Spier disassociated itself from the mail linking it with that French champagne.

Pinotage, the variety that isn’t even remotely similar to its parents, Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, still hasn’t managed to earn a reputation of Shiraz, Zinfandel or Malbec, varieties that could compete with it. Yet, despite being belittled in many parts of the world, Pinotage is still trying to develop its own recognizable style.
Wine has a dark cherry hue with ruby edges. Very succulent aromas of ripe sour cherries are complemented with tobacco aroma. In the taste, the aromas hint bubblegum and even bananas, but it ends in fruitiness that is closer to plums and dark berry fruits. The taste reveals oak tree that is unavoidable in this variety. The aftertaste is of solid length, although you couldn’t say it is elegant and impeccably clean. Wine has potential to last in the bottle for another four to five years, if not more.
