Fortant de France Grenache 2002

Fortant de France Grenache 2002
Skalli
Languedoc, France

Fortant de France brand was established by Skalli family in 1982. The passion for wines started much earlier, in early 20th century Algiers. In 1950, Francis Skalli managed to produce some high quality, full and rich wines from the varieties he took from the south of France: Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache and Alicante. However, the independence of Algiers in 1961 forced the family to relocate some of its production to Corsica and the region of Languedoc, where this Grenache comes from. Except in France, from the early 1980s, Skalli family is also present in Napa Valley, California.

Languedoc region is located in the south of France, and in this area dominated by the Mediterranean climate, Skalli has a multitude of smaller producers under its own brand, so today it controls around 3,750 acres under the vineyards throughout the Languedoc region.

After Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache is the third best spread variety in the world. Majority of the plantations can be found in France, Spain and Italy. In Spain, this variety is known under the name Garnacha or Garnacha Tinta, and is dominant in Rioja and Catalonia, while in Italy this variety is called Cannonau. Fortant de France Grenache 2002 is a wine made 100 percent from this variety. However, Grenache is more often used in blends of red varieties (e.g. with Syrah or Carignano) or for production of Rosé wine.

Since Grenache grapes are relatively poor in pigment, this can be seen in the color of this wine: it more goes towards pale red. Unfortunately, the characteristic of wine made of this variety is that it ages and oxidizes fast, and that was the case with this bottle. The typical fruity, fresh, youthful character of this wine is smothered by time. The bottle with the 2002 label did not manage to make it to March 2007, so although we recommend Grenache as a variety to Croatian wine consumers, we still advise they pay attention to the year.
