Rawson's Retreat Shiraz Cabernet 2007
Penfolds, Australia
When it comes to Australian wines, many people think of Penfolds first. From a family winery (established in 1884) it became a part of the global wine empire of Foster's Wine Estate, including wineries of Rosemount Estate, Beringer, Lindemans, Wolf Blass and others. Apart from this Shiraz Cabernet, the Rawson's Retreat product range that was launched in 1995 includes other varieties and blends like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Semillon Chardonnay and Riesling. Rawson's Retreat was named after the small country house of Christopher Rawson, the winery’s founder. It still stands today on the Magill Estate, near Adelaide in southern Australia.
Year after year we taste the harvests of this smooth wine of steady quality that will appeal to many wine lovers. The 2007 harvest, available in Croatian stores through Vivat i partneri wine boutique, is excellent and suitable for archiving for two or three years or to be consumed immediately.
Just like classic French blend models of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, The Australians have also created two completely original formulas: blend of Semillon and Chardonnay, blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Shiraz, which is the most widespread grape variety in Australia, gives robust, dark, tannin wines. The grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon also give wines of deep hues and, due to a high skin to juice ratio, of natural tannins and potential to last long.
This Rawson's Retreat is a blend of Shiraz (Syrah) and Cabernet Sauvignon. Aging in the barrels gave this wine a pleasant oak aroma, while it is somewhat harsh to touch (contributed by the “peppery” Shiraz).
The wine is very intensive and quite warm. In other words, it is warmed by 14 percent of alcohol by volume that you will feel at the end of the sip. With the help of the spicy and dominant Shiraz, the bouquet of this almost classic Australian blend hints freshly ground pepper and bitter olives, and the Cabernet hints the bitter-sweet flavor of ripe blackberry.
