Gajeta

In recent months, Gajeta tavern has via oral tradition become one of more popular spots for fish and Dalmatian cuisine. It deserved its reputation because of the excellent home-made cooking, fresh fish and seafood, and for the relaxed, intimate atmosphere. Although it can receive only thirty or so people, Gajeta was quite busy during this holiday season. This cute little tavern was named after the old fishing sailboat 6 to 12 meters long, with a rounded hull and pointy bow and stern. Gajeta was equipped with 4 to 6 oars, and the rowing is done standing up. The tavern's managers are natives of the island of Korcula, something you can tell from the menu and a characteristic atmosphere that dominates the space.

The cuisine of Gajeta is not pretentious. The accent lies on home-made cooking, perfectly fresh fish and seafood from the Adriatic, and the immediate approach to a limited number of guests. In other words, the limited capacity is key to the success of taverns like this, because any attempt of appealing to the masses is a threat to the quality and characteristic atmosphere. If you visit Gajeta, definitely try the bread fried octopus and anchovies, their famous octopus salad and bread fried shrimp. Continue with quality fresh fish or scampi, with the side dish Swiss Chard prepared in simple Dalmatian style. From the wine list, pick one of the high quality Dalmatian wines that will excellently pair with food. This will set you back some 500 kuna per person, because although Gajeta is small and modest looking, it is one of the taverns from the higher price category. Due to high demand, it is necessary to reserve a seat in advance, especially on the weekends.
