Bora bar

Bora bar
Rovenska, Veli Losinj

If you visit the island of Losinj, be sure to visit the Rovenska cove on Veliki Losinj, where in a picturesque little harbor, stands a special restaurant, owned by an Italian chef who is a Croat by marriage – Marco Sasso. With its decoration and menu, the Bora bar trattoria and tartuferia stands out among the local restaurants that offer a typical selection of Adriatic dishes. Different old tables and chairs, vesele paintings, school boards with the day’s menu written on them, everything exudes spontaneity and the Mediterranean spirit typical of more southern regions of our coast.

That chef Marco is a top notch cook we saw last winter in Zagreb, when he was the host of Tuscany Cuisine week in the Ribarski brevijar restaurant. A Tuscan by birth and a great aficionado of truffles (he uses to create sensational dishes that are a must taste!), he has a rich experience as he was working for many years in his home country, and for 20 years all across the US. His New Jersey restaurant Tartuferia restaurant won a prestigious review from Zagat, one of the most influential restaurant guides. His ricotta gnocchi with truffles were proclaimed the best pasta in New Jersey in 2003. Life brought him to Veli Losinj where he discovered flavors and aromas of his childhood, and ventured on an exciting Italo-Croatian gastronomic story.

We experienced some of that story last week, on a warm and fragrant night in Losinj. For couvert, we were served delicious truffle butter, and for hors d’oeuvres we tried sheep cheese Carpaccio with honey and saffron, and swordfish Carpaccio. We didn’t have much doubt about the main dish, we again wanted to taste the perfect flavor of ricotta truffle gnocchi. We were again witnesses that this delicacy, Chef Marco’s trademark, is excellent. We also tried home-made ricotta truffle ravioli. They were excellent as well. For dessert, we chose forest fruit panna cotta and homemade apple cake, which were quite solid. These delicacies were excellently paired with Chardonnay Trs Ilok, poured by the glass. Although we disagreed about the final verdict, because some members of our party thought the portions could be bigger or prices lower, we all agreed that Marco Sasso sure knows his cooking, and that Losinj greatly inspires him.

The menu of Bora bar is defined by the season, and everything revolves around mushrooms, Kvarner region scampi, fresh fish, home-made pasta, excellent ingredients from Cres and Losinj, and aromatic herbs.

General impression: excellent cooking, friendly décor. With a bit more generosity it might achieve quite a success.
