Masi Bonacosta Valpolicella 2007

Masi Bonacosta Valpolicella 2007

The good word about the Masi Agricola winery, owned for the impressive 6 generations by the Bosciani family, has spread throughout the world a long time ago. The winery is especially recognizable when it comes to wines made from local authentic varieties of the Italian region of Veneto. Valpolicella is a famous wine appellation located between lake Garda and Verona.

The grapes for this wine were picked separately since it ages in a different time. It was made by blending traditional varieties of Corvina (70 percent), Rondinella (25 percent) and Molinara (5 percent). The maceration lasted between 10 and 16 days, while the fermentation lasted for 20 days, followed by malolactic fermentation. After that, the wine aged for 6 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, while 20 percent of Corvina aged in small Slavonian and French barrels. Before marketing, the wine aged for another month in the bottle.

The result is a wine of a gentle ruby red hue with a light purple border. It is characteristic for predominantly floral aromas intertwined with a pleasant aroma of overripe sour cherries and cloves, while the palate reveals flavors of plum and sour cherry, and a gentle hint of cinnamon. This is a solidly structured, yet simple fruity wine, with pleasantly soft tannins and refreshing acidity. Personally, I think that it lacks a certain dose of acuteness and elegance.

If young, fresh fruity wines are your style, something this Valpollicela undoubtedly is, there is no doubt that you will enjoy this wine.
