Pomo d'oro Restaurant, Zagreb

It is always good to have a small, reliable restaurant in your neighborhood that you can visit when you don't feel like cooking, or when you wish to order some lunch to work. Pomo d’oro stands in the place of former Tockica bar, in a complex with numerous stores and bars in Maksimirska street, near the Pauk video store. And no, Pomo d'oro is not the same as Tomato, they are just very close to each other.

Anyway, this is small restaurant, and its design makes it more interesting and warmer than its predecessors. Although it does not have a patina, nor does it try to fool you that it has been here for centuries by placing antique items and photographs, it will make you feel comfortable. The same goes for the waiter who is helpful and friendly. A few things separate this restaurant from the standard ones in this kind. The first and perhaps the most interesting (and definitely the most important) thing is the menu. At first sight, it’s a standard menu with cold and hot hors d’oeuvres, salads and a few meat dishes, but it is in fact quite cunningly designed. All the ingredients and combinations are combined in all possible combinations, making the dishes more consistent and easier to make in the kitchen (resulting in better food!). So if for example you feel like having some pumpkin, you can order soup, pasta or risotto prepared with this ingredient.

It is nice that the pasta sauces and the meat preparation methods are listed separately, so you basically combine the pasta or meat you prefer. Bacon, ricotta, grana padano, sun dried tomatoes and pine nuts are just some of the ingredients you never purchase frozen, nor you can easily find their cheap replacement, so their inclusion on the menu is a sign that the chefs here mean business. Therefore, we can perhaps expect the menu to change with the season, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

The third thing that will catch your eye as soon as you sit at the table is a small wine list showing you which wines are poured by the glass. Names like Rosemount, Freixenet, Zdjelarević and Antinori mean that there is something for everybody. They have a delivery service during the week, with a special selection of pizza over the weekend. All in all, the atmosphere is pleasant and the food delicious, although it might be good if they paid equal attention to details in the kitchen and on the menu.
