Wolf Blass, Eaglehawk Chardonnay 2007

From a small winery established in 1966, Wolf Blass has become one of the Australian wineries with most success and awards. Its founder Wolf Blass, upon coming to Australia, was already an experienced and established winemaker in Germany. If you add to this his vision, great conditions for grapevine cultivation (that was at the time intensively discovered in some parts of Australia), his will to work and persistence, you get a winery whose path of development went only one way – up.
Eaglehawk brand was first marketed in 1988, and was conceived as a brand of quality sipping wines that will go well with simple dishes, but which can also be drank alone. Since then, it has accumulated a huge following with its smoothness, sincerity, and most probably by their constant quality, all in the “value for money” wine range.
One of the basic characteristics of the Chardonnay variety is that it adapts well to various climates and vinification techniques. We should seek there the reasons for its global popularity. The grapes for this specimen come from various vineyards in southeastern Australia. The fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks – this technology is necessary in warmer areas, in order to maximally preserve wine’s freshness and fruitiness. Some of the wine aged in contact with American and French oak – their influence can be seen with the first sip through a pleasantly creamy texture.
Also present are rather fresh and vibrant aromas of pear and quince, with hints of lemon that additionally accentuates the freshness of the wine. 14 percent of alcohol by volume seems like a lot for a white wine, even if it does come from the New World. However, the strength is completely masked by the wine’s solid structure. The expected fruitiness is very well supported with lively acids. With the flavors of butter this makes the wine rather soft and smooth. In our opinion, the greatest quality of this wine lies in the fact that the influence of wood was kept under control, so that all aromas and flavors can be felt.
This wine was made to be enjoyed immediately, just what the winemaker intended it to be. We warmly recommended it for the coming hot days.
