Romanian leu firms strongly on Basescu's return to office

The Romanian leu strengthened versus the euro on Tuesday supported by the official return of President Traian Basescu to office after 52 days of suspension, local dealers said.

The Romanian parliament voted on July 6 to suspend Basescu from office on charges of overstepping his authority. The suspension was followed by the impeachment referendum on July 29. Last week, Romania's Constitutional Court ruled that the referendum was invalid due to the insufficient voter turnout, thus reinstating Basescu as the president.
